District chess season opens in Empangeni

The King Cetshwayo Chess Association is hosting its first tournament of the year starting today at Empangeni

THE King Cetshwayo Chess Association is hosting its first tournament of the year on 18 and 19 February in Empangeni.

Proudly sponsored by Imperial City Campus, bursary prizes to the value of R35 000 will be awarded to the top 3 open section overall winners (U18, U20 and adult).

Registration takes place between 7am and 8.30am before the first round begins at 9am on Saturday. The two-day tournament takes place at Empangeni High School hall at 31 Farewell Road, Fairview.

“We are looking forward to seeing more new players participate in our chess tournament.

“We also wish to thank our sponsor Imperial City Campus for being a huge supporter of chess in the district,” said chairperson of the King Cetshwayo Chess Association, Lisa Griffiths.

Registration must be done early, with the entry form and copy of birth certificate emailed before/by 16 February. The entry fee is R90 for U8 – U16 entrants and R100 for U18, U20 and adult competitors.
