Record-breaking temperatures expected in KZN as heatwave intensifies

EXTREME temperatures presently being experienced across the country are set to persist in Zululand until Thursday.

Over Zululand, extremely high temperatures, with some record-breaking minimum and maximum figures, are expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday’s maximum temperatures may peak between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius in places, with a forecast of 39 for Richards Bay.

Thursday may also likely see record-breaking temperatures, as maximum figures range from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the region.

Temperatures are expected to drop on Friday but soar again by Sunday.

Community members should exercise extra caution during the hottest parts of the day.

Drink lots of fluids (slightly salted but not caffeine or too much alcohol), avoid strenuous physical activities in these hot, humid conditions, stay indoors or in air-conditioned or well-ventilated areas, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting or bright-coloured (cotton) clothing, sun hats, and apply sunscreen if outdoors.

Most importantly, never leave children or pets in closed, hot spaces such as cars, and ensure they drink appropriate fluids to avoid dehydration.

Schools are opening as the heatwave intensifies, so ensure children take water bottles.

Any means of keeping your body cool during this heatwave may help prevent heat-related illnesses such as hyperthermia (i.e. heat stroke, heat exhaustion/stress, heat cramps, dehydration and fainting).

If you must be outside owing to your job or sport, let your body gradually acclimate to the heat.
