NSRI Richards Bay, Ballito activated after reports of missing ski-boat crewmen off Tugela Mouth

Search launched for missing crewmen

NATIONAL Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rescue vessels from Richards Bay, Ballito and Durban have been activated following reports of three ski-boat crewmen who are missing at sea.

At about 2.30pm today (Thursday), IPSS Medical Rescue reported a ski-boat in distress one to two nautical miles out to sea from Tugela river mouth, and had launched a search in conjunction with lifeguards from Mandeni.

“Mandeni lifeguards have made it out to the vessel where it appears all three occupants are missing,” said IPSS’ Samantha Meyrick.

“Three occupants launched the ski from Tugela river mouth this morning and have not made it back to shore.”

Meyrick said it is hoped the port authority helicopter will soon be activated to assist in the search.

“Beach patrols are also under way in the hopes that the three occupants have made it to shore safely,” concluded Meyrick.
