More than 200 GBV criminals arrested

GBV offenders arrested in run-up to 16 Days of Activism

As police clamp down on crimes against women and children, some 238 suspects were arrested in KZN in October.

This is the result of work done by the KZN Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit investigating officers.

Arrests were made for crimes such as rape, kidnapping and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, as well as child neglect, and indecent exposure.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, these suspects were all arrested in October.

“During that period, 30 convictions were secured by various courts in the province.

These included five life sentences and 356 years of imprisonment for the various accused.

“As more cases are pending in court, it is certain that many more will be handed down sentences that will serve as a lesson to others who abuse women and children.

“As a result of victims who broke the silence, and through their courage in reporting incidents of exploitation, detectives were able to secure convictions and put the perpetrators behind bars.

“We encourage more victims to come forward and report cases to the police,” she said.
