Affected areas in Zululand include Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mandeni, Mthonjaneni, Mtuba, Nkandla, Nongoma, Ulundi, uMhlathuze, uMhlabuyalingana, uMlalazi and Pongola.

According to the SAWS warning, widespread rain (80%) and thundershowers are expected over KZN.

“Significant amounts of rainfall are expected over the south-eastern parts on Saturday morning and will spread to the northern parts towards late morning into the afternoon. Rainfall accumulation of more than 40mm can be expected in some parts” said the warning.

The weather service urges citizens to stay indoors where possible, and to avoid low-level crossings, rivers and low-lying areas.

Impacts include possibility of localised mudslides and soil erosion, damage to informal settlements, and flooding of roads and low-lying areas.

Motorists are reminded to reduce speed on wet roads and in areas of poor visibility and to take extra caution on roads riddled with potholes that could be filled with water presenting the increased risk of sinkholes.
