WATCH: Mass wash-up of krill on Richards Bay beaches

Scientists are investigating potential causes behind the phenomenon

ENVIRONMENTAL scientists are analysing what appears to be krill, which washed up on Richards Bay’s beaches this morning (Tuesday).

Beach-goers and surfers noticed thousands of the small crustaceans that had washed up on both Newark Beach and Alkantstrand.

Photographic and video evidence has been sent to scientists who are at present baffled by the mass washing up of the krill, but are looking into potential causes.

Krill are found in all the world’s oceans, and the collective name for these invertebrates is a ‘swarm’.

While small in size (averaging 5cm in length), krill play a large role within the ecosystem.

They feed on phytoplankton but are the main food source for many larger marine animals.
