Shemula Water Treatment Works supplies water to large parts of northern KZN

SHEMULA Water Treatment Works, which provides potable water to households in the northern parts of Jozini and uMhlabuyalingana, is finally operational after seven years.

On Thursday, uMkhanyakude Mayor Siphile Mdaka visited the plant after calling for it to be fixed in April this year.

The plant is estimated to treat seven million milligrams of water per day.

Mdaka said the functional treatment is good news for residents who have been suffering without access to water.

He also visited Makwakwa area where he met with its local water committee to inspect work being done, installing standpipes for residents.

Mdaka inspected the local reservoir in April and instructed engineers to fix the issues identified. However, during his Thursday visit, the mayor found the reservoir was not supplying water to locals.

“We are not taking people seriously,” said the concerned mayor, who insisted water issues would be addressed as a matter of urgency.

He reiterated his call to the municipal workers and engineers that no water disruptions should occur in areas that are currently receiving water.
