What will you be doing for your 67 minutes on Madiba Day?

Peg up your laundry of love on the ZO charity lines

The countdown is on to the Zululand Observer’s annual charity drive on Madiba Day.

The public is encouraged to devote 67 minutes of their time in a novel and charitable way by heading to the charity lines in Empangeni and Richards Bay on Monday, 18 July.

The annual ‘Hang out with Madiba’ campaign will see washing lines erected in front of the newspaper’s offices in Empangeni (Baines Road) and in the open space between the Civic Centre and East Central Arterial in Richards Bay.

All you need to do is bring along packets of pegs to hang up donated winter woollies, clothing and blankets on the charity lines between 7.30am and 12 noon.

Volunteers will be on hand to accept laundered used or new clothing and blankets, as well as non-perishable food items to assist NPOs and vulnerable members of the community.

The recent flooding and rising food and fuel costs have seen a wave of humanitarian work being carried out by ordinary people across the country to help the most disadvantaged communities.

Zululand is no exception, and during this time when families are struggling financially and facing unemployment, the provision of food, winter clothing and blankets has never been more needed.

The washed laundry of love collected on the day will be distributed via the ZO’s charity arm – Dice (Do I Care

Enough?) to needy organisations and communities.

This year, the ZO has again partnered with the City of uMhlathuze and Rotary Clubs of Empangeni and Richards Bay to ensure Zululanders are part of this philanthropic effort aimed at helping the destitute.

Service clubs, school children and businesses are also invited to peg up donated items of clothing and blankets onto the extra-long washing lines.

There is nothing stopping companies, institutions and schools from erecting their own charity washing lines on the day.

Unable to get to our charity line on the day, please give us a call.
