Environmentalists lobby against drilling off KZN coast

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance has intensified calls for boycotting offshore oil and gas drilling

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance’s (SDCEA) stance against oil and gas exploration in coastal communities continues, with the organisation intensifying calls for the boycotting of TotalEnergies, Shell and their local allies, PetroSA and Impact Africa.

Last week, the SDCEA called on members of KZN’s coastal communities to join them with demonstrations to highlight the devastating impacts of oil and gas exploration.

This as the Impact/Shell case is being heard at the Gqeberha High Court this week where a verdict will be offered on whether the oil and gas exploration will proceed.

In a statement, the SDCEA called for communities and organisations to join in the protest action aimed at boycotting oil and gas companies associated with Shell and Impact.

‘The SDCEA stands in solidarity with other organisations and coastal communities to boycott Shell and Impact’s associated companies while the case is being heard.

‘On May 21, when the latest Rain Bomb was hitting Durban, SDCEA was leading a protest outside the Tsogo

Suncoast Casino, to tell Copelyn and Shell not to wreck the ocean and climate.

‘In December, we targeted the same casino in a protest against seismic blasting. We will take the struggle now to all Tsogo Sun hotels in Durban if Copelyn fails to cease and desist from planetary destruction.

‘We call on the public to join these protests. Make your voice heard.

‘Hold a community meeting or a meeting with friends. Write letters to the press and the president of South Africa.’

In Richards Bay, residents carrying placards and boards marched to the harbour where they protested against oil and gas.
