5 foods to avoid high blood pressure

A change in diet can lower hypertension risk

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the long-term force of the blood against artery walls which causes health problems.

High blood pressure symptoms are often hard to identify, but it’s important for those who are diagnosed to monitor what they eat and certain types of foods that contribute to the disease.

Co-founder of Newtricion Wellness Dieticians, Omy Naidoo, said that a healthy diet is vital when monitoring hypertension.

‘You may be able to minimise the need to take medication by successfully controlling your blood pressure with a healthy diet,’ explained Naidoo.

‘Getting your blood pressure checked regularly is the best way to determine if you require medication, just as being aware of the foods to avoid can help you reduce your risk of hypertension. ‘If left untreated, hypertension can cause a heart attack, dementia, aneurysm, stroke and kidney failure.’

5 foods to avoid to lower the risk of hypertension

1. Salt
Salt is the leading cause of hypertension owing to its effect on blood fluid balance.
‘Your body retains additional fluid when you consume salt and raises your blood pressure by increasing blood volume and pressure in the arteries.
‘The minerals in leafy greens, including spinach, broccoli, kale, and collards – which are high in potassium – help the body eliminate salt through urine and relaxes blood vessel walls,’ said Naidoo.

2. Red meats
The digestion of red meat results in the body producing compounds and chemicals that increase blood pressure even further.
Patients with hypertension patients are advised to consume meat in moderation or choose lean cuts of red meat.

3. Processed foods
Processed foods with trans and saturated fats increase the production of bad cholesterol (LDL), which has an influence on raising blood pressure.
LDL clogs and hardens arteries resulting in serious health and heart complications. Foods to avoid include fried foods, margarine and dairy.

4. Alcohol
Excessive alcohol consumption causes your muscles to contract, narrowing your blood vessels. The narrowed vessels and arteries cause your heart to work harder, increasing blood pressure. Alcohol consumption also contributes to obesity which increases the risk of hypertension.

5. Sugar
An increased intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and sugar-rich food is also linked to a higher risk of hypertension.
While a sugary beverage now and then is fine, consuming a lot of it might elevate the blood pressure. Many sugary drinks, such as sodas and fruit juices, include caffeine or high fructose corn syrup, both of which can increase blood pressure.

‘A balanced diet and smart food choices can make a big difference in managing and preventing hypertension.
‘It is also important to exercise regularly, and take any medications prescribed by your doctor,’ concluded Naidoo.
