Acting head of municipal communications Khulekani Msweli said, of these houses, 74 were ‘totally damaged’, while only six ‘partially’ so.

Msweli said these houses were spread out over various wards across Mtubatuba, including ward 3, Dukuduku.

Msweli added that following engagements with Sassa, affected persons will receive blankets, mattresses and food vouchers for three months.

‘The mayor consulted with various departments, urging them to make contributions and many of them have promised to donate clothing,’ Msweli said.

He added that Mtubatuba Mayor Mxolisi Mthethwa and the council were finalising a programme geared towards fixing the roads that were severely damaged in the flooding.

‘In wards such as Dukuduku where houses were inundated with water, a TLB has been sent to dig trenches so water can be drained,’ Msweli said.

Dukuduku Ward Councillor Ntokozo Mlungwana said it was important that a drainage system be constructed, in particular in the eMakhoweni area which was mostly affected.

‘This is so we can pave a way forward because if this is not done, future heavy rains could completely destroy people’s homes,’ Mlungwana said.

uMkhanyakude District Municipality Chief Whip Siyabonga Khumalo said uMkhanyakude Mayor Siphile Mdaka visited the eMakhoweni area after Mlungwana wrote a letter to the municipality asking for assistance.

Khumalo said during his visit, Mdaka found that ‘people are in serious trouble’ and so held a meeting at which digging trenches with the TLB was decided upon.

Khumalo, who is a former Dukuduku ward councillor, said 20 to 30 homes were affected, some more seriously than others.
