Drastic measures needed to prevent attacks on Amakhosi, Izinduna

Investigation around the killings of Amakhosi and Iziduna soon to commence

A commision of inquiry has been established into the killing of Amakhosi and Izinduna in KZN.

This announcement has been supported by the IFP, with provincial spokesperson for community safety and liaison, Blessed Gwala calling it ‘long overdue’.

‘While we support the establishment of such a commission, the IFP has long been calling on the government to stand up and protect Amakhosi,’ said Gwala, adding that one drawback of these commissions is that investigations don’t always yield results.

‘There are multiple cases involving the murder of Amakhosi which have been waiting for years to be resolved.

‘Prosecutors are sometimes seen to be afraid of pursuing such cases as they fear for their lives, which results in perpetrators not being held accountable.’

He said the IFP is calling for the new Community Safety Intervention Unit (CSIU) – established in KZN to deal with safety challenges experienced by traditional leaders – to be afforded the resources and manpower to crack down on these criminals.

‘Drastic measures are required, and there is no more time to waste as lives are being lost,’ Gwala said.
