Ambassador clubs bring youth closer to nature

Enviromental knowledge was gained when Conservation Ambassadors, in collaboration with Wildlife ACT’s Community Conservation Programme, hiked Giant’s Castle to view historically significant caves at this World Heritage Site.

Ambassador clubs were formed for the youth from communities living adjacent to parks, who are passionate about conservation and interested in pursuing a career in the field.

These ambassadors travelled from northern KZN for a Wildlife ACT workshop on 17 March, hosted in collaboration with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s

S’Fundimvelo programme.

The programme, wrapping up at Ezemvelo’s Wagendrift Youth Centre, is designed to showcase conservation initiatives in different parts of the province.

The recent hike to Giant’s Castle gave these ambassadors the chance to learn more about the Drakensberg, an area steeped in history and superb rock art.

After an enjoyable hike in cool weather, the group was welcomed by one of Ezemvelo’s experts who spoke about the caves and the San artwork, some of which dates back some 5 000 years.
