School shoe campaign takes off
This community programme aims to donate shoes to underprivileged pupils mostly in rural areas
A local initiative aims to empower over 200 pupils with school shoes in January.
This community programme, spearheaded by Funokuhle Interventions, aims to donate shoes to underprivileged pupils mostly in rural areas.
According to the team, the campaign will assist in curbing school bullying and will be working around the clock to collect as many pairs of shoes during the festive season as possible.
‘As an organisation that focuses on women empowerment, community development and youth education, we are fighting for equality in schools.
‘Bullying in schools is sometimes caused by inequality among pupils. If every child looks the same, no child will feel better or more powerful than another.
‘Most children end up failing at school because they are being teased and bullied owing to how they look or how they do certain things.
‘Our aim is to close that gap, and this drive will ensure children feel equal and respect each other,’ said project co-ordinator Methembe Mathe.
The group has already managed to collect 69 pairs of shoes, but they need Zululand’s support to ensure the programme becomes a success.
