WATCH: Substation fire causes Bay power outage
While power was restored to some areas by 8am, other areas in the Richards Bay CBD including Alton, were still without electricity
The Richards Bay CBD and surrounding areas were plunged into darkness in the early hours of this morning (Sunday) when a fire broke out at the Scorpio substation, destroying a transformer and a control room.
The City of uMhlathuze’s fire and rescue department was quickly dispatched to extinguish the blaze.

While power was restored to some areas by 8am, other areas in the Richards Bay CBD including Alton, were still without electricity.
The cause of the blaze is yet to be established.
Fire & Rescue teams are extinguishing fire at Scorpio Sub-station near SOUTH32 Hillside Smelter. One transformer burnt down including the entire control room.
