We won’t allow Zuma to go to jail – MKMVA

'Zuma is not a thief or fraudster but he is our liberation’s hero' - MKMVA spokesperson Carl Niehaus

A TOP ANC leadership contingent is expected to arrive at Nkandla today to try and persuade convicted former president Jacob Zuma and his supporters to honour the Concourt ruling.

Zuma was on Tuesday sentenced to 15 months jail imprisonment for refusing to appear before the State Capture Commission led by Deputy Justice, Raymond Zondo.

Scores of Zulu warriors, religious leaders and other Zuma supporters have descended on his homestead since Wednesday to show their support following the judgment.

Speaking outside Zuma’s homestead on Friday afternoon, Military Veterans Association – Mkhonto We Sizwe (MKMVA) spokesperson, Carl Niehaus said they would support and protect Zuma from going to jail. ‘We will do everything within the law to protect him. Zuma has been targeted since he was the deputy president and for almost 20 years.

As the MKMVA, we will form a human shield to protect him. ‘I don’t want to speculate about the way forward but he can appeal the Concourt ruling that was handed down and object the warrant of arrest. I know he will do everything possible in order to avoid violence and instability.

‘This is something he does not want. Zuma does not want his country to be torn by war,’ he said.

Protect Zuma

Niehaus said the MKMVA had adopted a resolution during their fifth national conference to protect Zuma and they were merely executing that resolution.

‘Zuma is our chief patron. I have been sent by the MKMVA NEC to deliver this message, which is the summary of the resolution we took, that we will continue to support Zuma.

‘The presence of the MKMVA here is not coincidental.

We have full support of the MKMVA. When I came here I met with the commander of the base.

We thanked them for their dedication shown to Zuma.

‘We will not allow Zuma to be jailed. Whatever we do, we will do it within the parameters and confinement of the law.

We will be uncompromising. ‘We say to the world – look what is happening here. Zuma is not a thief or fraudster but he is our liberation’s hero,’ he said.
