School contact sport suspended with immediate effect

School sport takes a breather owing to third wave of Covid-19

THE atmosphere at schools changed drastically today (Wednesday) after the Department of Basic Education announced that all contact sport is suspended with immediate effect.

This after school sport activity-related Covid-19 outbreaks in Gauteng, and a general rise in cases across the country.

The decision was taken at a virtual meeting this morning.

‘Non-contact sport training in schools can continue, provided all social distancing, hygiene and safety measures are observed and that there is no physical contact between participants during training,’ said the department in a statement.

‘Following this announcement, all scheduled fixtures have been cancelled,’ said St Catherine’s School sports co-ordinator, Karen Braithwaite.

‘While we are disappointed to not be playing, we fully support any national effort made to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

‘This news has certainly disappointed many athletes in the district, after a number of them were selected to represent the district team in a variety of sporting codes at KZN trials.

‘During these challenging times, pupils have enjoyed participating in sport, as it gives the mind a chance to unplug from the daily stresses and strains of life, and reduces stress hormones in the body while stimulating the release of endorphins.

‘These endorphins give the energy needed to focus.

‘There are other benefits from sport, like better sleep, a strong heart, improved lung functions, increased confidence, improving mental health, building leaders and developing strong relationships.

‘But at St Catherine’s, we support the Department of Basic Education’s decision and will ensure we follow the strict guidelines and rules in place to ensure a healthy and productive schooling environment.’
