Once complete, it will benefit the communities of wards 8 and 15, including the villages of Mfolozane, Ehlabosini, Lower Mfolozi and Nozambula.

Speaking at the sod-turning event last week, District Deputy Mayor, Bhekani Phungula said the multi-million rand project will also provide job opportunities for local communities.

‘The contractor will provide 40% of procurement opportunities to local sub-contractors registered on the King Cetshwayo targeted enterprise database.

‘The project will follow Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) principles and will include labour-intensive construction.

Local labour will be sourced through an established project steering committee made up of members within Mhlana Somopho Phase 3C, where the project will be supplying water,’ said Phungula.

Following the sod-turning ceremony, the deputy mayor also launched the Melmoth dam fencing project.

A fence will be installed at the Melmoth secondary dam in Thubalethu to curb drownings.
