‘This is a crime because all the stationery was bought and paid for by the department,’ said Department spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi.

According to the department, some schools have gone as far as not issuing stationery to learners owing to
non-payment.

‘It is illegal for schools to withhold reports. Schools are encouraged to discuss the situation with parents and make payment arrangements, without disturbing the child’s education in the process.

‘However, in the same vein, we urge all parents who owe money to schools, to come forward in order to make arrangements,’ said Mahlambi.
