Teams will work on the 800-millimetre pipeline from Nsezi to Empangeni, from 6am to 6pm.

The total shutdown will affect Empangeni CBD, Panorama, Kildare, Noordsig, Nyala Park, Hillview, Fairview, Carsdale, Grantham Park, Empangeni Rail, Kuleka, Dumisani Makhaye Village, Matshana, Mevamhlophe and uDondolo, as well as wards 9, 23, 24, 25 and parts of wards 27 and 31.

The City of uMhlathuze has encouraged all affected community members to store enough water in containers for the duration of the shutdown.

This planned shutdown is aimed at conducting a routine check-up, maintenance, and fixing and servicing the bulk line to ensure that water supply is not interrupted in future.

Nsezi Water Treatment Works is one of the critical water sources managed by Mhlathuze Water to service its clients, including the City of uMhlathuze.

Periodic maintenance of infrastructure is crucial for both the city and its service providers to consistently supply to communities.

Most infrastructure in the City of uMhlathuze, mainly for water supply, is aged and requires proper service and periodic planned maintenance to ensure effective supply.

The long-term plan is to completely eradicate the old infrastructure and replace it with new PVC pipes.

The city will keep the affected community members abreast of all developments pertaining to the shutdown until the water supply is fully restored.

Community members are also encouraged to follow the city’s social media updates.
