Richards Bay FC dethrones the mighty Amakhosi

Kaizer Chiefs knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by the NRB giant-killers!

FROM the brilliant goal scored by Thabani Dube in the 26th minute, glamour club Kaizer Chiefs knew they were in for a fight as Richards Bay FC showed no fear in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 encounter this afternoon (Sunday).

Gavin Hunt’s men were forced to make four changes at the break, bringing on the big boys to replace the second-stringers they thought would see them coast home against NFD opposition.

But Richards Bay had a plan, carefully orchestrated by Simo Dladla and his technical team, and the players hardly put a foot wrong in the implementation.

The heroes were too many to mention, from Malcolm Jacobs in goal to the incredible centre back pairing of Dube and Veluyeke Zulu; to skipper Siphamandla Mtolo and Victor Bakah doing the dirty work in the engine room; and then the tireless man of the match Katleho Maphathe leading the charge on attack.

Chiefs did come back with a scrappy goal from Leonardo Castro (1-1) in the 75th minute but the Natal Rich Boyz refused to surrender and justice was done when Siyabonga Vilane slotted home the rebound from Bayzel Goldstone’s fiery drive after the latter was put through by Thabo Maphakisa in the final minute (2-1).

It’s a result that will not only echo through the shocked SA soccer fraternity but will give Richards Bay the confidence to know they belong in the PSL and can, and must, win promotion this season.
Viva NRB, Viva!
