Hluhluwe dam levels improve thanks to recent rainfall

Hluhluwe dam recorded an increase of 6% after recent heavy rains

HLUHLUWE dam levels have shown a healthy increase following recent heavy rains in the region.

According to the latest report by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), the dam increased from 67.6% to 73.4% last week.

Goedertrouw dam near eShowe shifted slightly from 62.8% in the previous week to 62.9% last week, while Pongolapoort also recorded an improvement, rising from 39.8% to 40.3% last week.

Although recent rainfall has been a plus for water levels in the province, the department has warned residents about the danger of crossing flooded rivers and dams during times of flood.

DWS spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau said dam safety regulation officials are on high alert to give support in cases of severe dam spillages.

‘We are working very closely with the provincial Department Of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and municipalities, as well as our sister department, Human Settlements, in order to assist flooded communities in this dire time of need,’ said Ratau.

He said the annual flood preparedness plan is also in place in anticipation of high levels of rainfall, especially during the summer rainfall period.

‘This plan is meant to enhance monitoring of rainfall, inflows into rivers and dams, as well as to raise alarm bells timeously in case of impending danger through floods.’
