Social Development MEC calls for intensified investigation into spate of social development office robberies

'It is very disappointing that the criminals continue to target government offices' - MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza

KZN MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza, has appealed to the police to intensify their investigation following an armed robbery at the Utrecht department’s service office in the Amajuba district last Sunday night.

A report indicates that a group of armed men stormed the offices and tied up security guards with ropes before taking keys to access the offices.

‘Ten computers in different offices, two TV screens mounted at the reception desk and boardroom were taken.

They also took a state vehicle after finding keys in the desk drawer.

‘The security guards were rescued by police only the next morning, after which the office manager was contacted.

‘The robbery will result in a major setback to services to our clients,’ said Khoza.

‘It is very disappointing that the criminals continue to target government offices, which causes major disruptions in service delivery to the communities.’

She added her department had experienced a number of such incidents in different offices across the province where vehicles and computers were stolen last year, expressing concern that no one has since been arrested.

‘There seems to be a syndicate of criminals operating across the province, targeting offices of the Department of Social Development.’
