NRB draw Kaizer Chiefs in strange Nedbank Cup twist

Cup fixtures are scheduled for early February, with dates and venues still to be announced

THE revised Nedbank Cup Last 32 draw took place on Thursday evening, with Richards Bay FC drawing the (once) mighty Kaizer Chiefs.

With only professional clubs allowed to compete owing to the lockdown rules, the 16 PSL and 16 NFD teams will contest the Last 32 games.

This includes eight NFD sides that had already been knocked out of the competition, including Pretoria University who were beaten by the NRB boys at the uMhlathuze Stadium last month.

The PSL released a statement saying, ‘The PSL has discussed the matter with Nedbank and agreed that the only appropriate way to deal with the matter is to restore the eight GladAfrica championship teams recently knocked out in the qualification competition to the Nedbank Cup.’

Cup fixtures are scheduled for early February, with dates and venues still to be announced.

With spectators still banned from stadiums, much of the glamour of the competition will be absent – especially the dreams of giant-killing results against the country’s top sides in front of fanatical home supporters.
