New car sales figures dropped 29% in 2020

2020's sales figure represents a 29.1% fall from that of 2019 and the lowest in two decades

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa) has released the overall new vehicle sales figures for 2020.

Naamsa said a total of 380 449 new passenger cars, bakkies and trucks were sold in the country last year, which is a whopping 156 163 units down from 2019 when 536 612 vehicles were sold.

2020’s sales figures represent a 29.1% fall from that of 2019 and the lowest in two decades.

The organisation said while this dramatic drop was partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s heavy impact on business in 2020, SA’s poorly run economy is also to blame, and pointed out that this significant fall happened despite a 300-basis point interest-rate cut, the lowest in 50 years.

For 2021, Naamsa predicts a 15% growth on last year’s figures, but warned the automotive industry of tough times ahead as business and consumer sentiment remain negative because of the current uncertainty as to how much more the Covid-19 pandemic will affect the SA market.

Here are the top 15 passenger vehicle sellers for December:
