WATCH: Catch of a lifetime for eShowe angler
The catch unofficially bettered the world record set in 2017
A FISHING expedition last week turned into an unofficial record-breaking event for eShowe angler Chris Ayerst when he landed a tiger shark weighing a whopping 566kg.
It was the end of the day’s fishing last Monday and Chris was ready to go home but, giving in to his buddy’s nagging, he decided to put in one last cast.

The result was Chris landing this 4.25m female tiger shark which, at first glance, resembled a submarine in the shallows of the Mtunzini banks.
While this catch is certainly not the ‘one that got away’, there will be no official record as Chris does not belong to a fishing club.
This does not trouble him, however, as fishing is his passion and the angling goals he sets for himself are purely for his pleasure.
Once measured up, the shark was released into the sea.
The full story, which can be read in this week’s ZO Monday edition (23 November), tells of an epic fight between man and fish, and how the whopper of a catch may not have been, had Chris not been in the process of landing a smaller shark when the half-tonne tiger took the bait.
