Pet safety a priority as heat levels soar

How to keep your animals safe in the soaring summer temperatures

With temperatures soaring as Sizzle City lives up to its name, pet owners are urged to take extra precautions when protecting their animals from the summer heat.

Ensure dogs and cats, or any pet for that matter, has access to sufficient water that is kept in the shade, to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion.

The SPCA recommendations include:

• Companion animals should not be taken out in vehicles, except for emergency situations, such as visits to the veterinarian

• Dog owners should refrain from walking or exercising dogs in the heat of the day. If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s pads

• Do not keep animals confined

• Ensure animals have lots of water and access to shade

• Working animals, like security dogs, should be monitored carefully to avoid dehydration, fatigue or even heatstroke.
