Do not hitchhike, says Mtubatuba Taxi Association

'Taking a lift from a stranger is like dicing with your life. Women might get raped'

MTUBATUBA Taxi Owners Local and Long Distance Association has appealed to commuters, especially women, to use taxi ranks and stop hitchhiking along the N2 as they become easy targets for criminals.

Association spokesperson, Siphelele Mbatha said they have an open door policy to assist financially struggling commuters to get to their destination without putting their lives in danger.

‘Many people have been mugged and robbed of their belongings.

‘Taking a lift from a stranger is like dicing with your life. Women might get raped.

‘It is hard for police to trace the perpetrators because in many cases there are no witnesses.

‘We will never win the fight against crime if people fail to take charge of their safety. We are concerned about women and children abuse, but cannot stop this on our own,’ Mbatha said.

On another subject, he commended the efforts of the Department of Transport to rehabilitate the P235/1 road which has many potholes.

He advised taxi drivers to obey all the road signs as there will be a lot of stop-and-go while the road is under construction.

‘Commuters need to know that there will be delays owing to traffic congestion.

‘The road upgrade will start at the Nkodibe bridge in Mtubatuba to Hlabisa.

It covers about 47.7 km and is expected to take about 18 months to complete.’
