Lost revenue as Richards Bay Airport remains closed

Passengers have had to fly to King Shaka International Airport and drive to the area, potentially impacting both the corporate and leisure industries

DESPITE the July re-opening of South African airports for leisure and business travel, Richards Bay Airport is yet to resume operations.

The local airport, which was given the green light to reopen in August, has not been operating as negotiations to finalise the operational running of the airport are ongoing.

While the airport remains closed, passengers have had to fly to King Shaka International Airport and drive through to the area, potentially impacting both the corporate and leisure industries.

The situation is further exacerbated by the continued closure of South African waters to international yachts, as reported recently in the ZO.

City of uMhlathuze spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane said they are working on a plan to revive the local tourism sector, which involves welcoming passengers through the airport.

‘We have opened all tourism establishments under Level 1 of the Covid-19 lockdown, and engaged the sector in anticipation of an increase in visitors for leisure or business travel,’ said Ncalane.

He said recovery plans are aligned with the provincial strategy to ensure readiness for all travellers.

‘Through the uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation, we are monitoring every establishment to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

‘This will safeguard employees, and ensure tourists are protected throughout the city, during safari experiences, at restaurants or night clubs,’ he said.

‘We hope uMhlathuze will be the destination of choice for tourists looking to unwind after an incredibly difficult year.’
