Don’t fall victim to this online sales scam

If a sale appears too good to be true, it probably is

THE financial impact of the Covid-19 lockdown has seen a spike in the number of scams, with many people losing significant amounts of money.

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, said cases of fraud are being reported daily, particularly related to the purchase of vehicles and goods online.

‘We have noted that many of the vehicle scams request the buyer to pay a deposit via a transfer payment, and then the ‘seller’ cannot be reached,’ she explained.

‘In other instances, the seller denies receiving payment and cannot be traced.’

She said one resident had lost thousands of rands on the sale of an expensive camera.

‘The camera was sent, via courier, to the buyer, but the payment never reflected in his account as promised.’

She warned that if a sale appears too good to be true, it probably is.
