Homeless man found dead in Empangeni greenbelt

Empangeni SAPS have opened an inquest docket

AN unidentified man was found strangled in a greenbelt in Grantham Park, Empangeni on Thursday morning.

According to resident Siya Ndlovu, he found the man with a dog leash wrapped around his neck and his left hand clenched onto the collar, when he was on his way to work on Thursday.

Ndlovu said he frequently uses the greenbelt en route to work and recognised the victim as a homeless man who lived in the bush.

‘I saw him lying there on Wednesday morning, but thought he might be high or passed out drunk, so I thought nothing more of it,’ said Ndlovu.

‘But when I saw him still lying in the same position the next morning, I went closer to see if he was alright.

‘That’s when I noticed the dog leash around his neck. I ran to work to notify my employer, who called the police.’

An inquest docket was registered at Empangeni SAPS for investigation.
