Beware of bogus police officers

Members of the community have a right to demand to see identification when they are stopped by police officers

KING CETSHWAYO police have issued an alert about bogus police officers who rob people in the region, especially in the eShowe policing area.

The fake officers wear masks with police logos on them.

King Cetshwayo cluster police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said no police officer is allowed to wear a mask with only a police logo.

The correct police mask is blue in colour, has the official logo and ‘SAPS’ written on the right side.

‘We have discovered there are opportunists who have manufactured their own masks with police logos on with the intention of deceiving and robbing unsuspecting community members.

This is a legal SAPS face mask

‘When a member of the public is stopped by an officer wearing a mask with only a police logo on it, this must be reported to the nearest police station, or call the police emergency number for assistance.

‘They must also refuse to get into the bogus police officer’s vehicle to avoid becoming victims,’ Mdlalose said.

Mdlalose stressed that police always use marked police vehicles when conducting operations and visibility patrols.

‘Police may not use unmarked vehicles, and must wear their uniforms when conducting roadblocks or any form of operation.’

Mdlalose did point out that there are some instances where a motorist may be stopped by a police officer in an unmarked police vehicle.

‘Most of our detectives do not use marked police vehicles and they do not wear their uniforms, but when they interact with the public they produce identification before executing their duties.

‘Members of the community have a right to demand to see identification when they are stopped by police officers,’ he said.
