Unizulu condemns misinformation on students’ return

The university campus remains closed to all students except for those who have already officially returned

THE University of Zululand (Unizulu) has condemned the circulation of an SMS message encouraging students to return to the university’s two campuses to sign a document confirming their registration at the institution.

Unizulu last week denied it had sent out such a request and urged students to remain at home until officially instructed otherwise by the university.

‘The statement seeks to induce innocent students to unwittingly and unlawfully return to campus. Management discourages all students from acceding to this request,’ the university said in a statement.

‘According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, the King Cetshwayo district is regarded as a coronavirus hot spot and the university falls within this area.

‘Management would not risk the safety and well-being of its students and staff with a call for students to come to campus to merely to sign a form.’

The university said it has, however, been utilising multi-modal platforms to ensure teaching and learning continued during the Covid-19 lockdown.

‘The roll-out of laptops and data are imminent and students will be advised accordingly in due course. ‘The university campus remains closed to all students except for those who have already officially returned.

‘Management implores students to guard against fake news. By now students should be familiar with the university’s legitimate communication platforms.’
