Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo a Gti beater

Autodealer recently revealed that Mazda plans to introduce a ‘hot’ version of its Mazda 3 hatch to certain markets.

Having released all its figures for this spiced-up version, it’s clear this Japanese-brand hatch will give the VW Gti a run for its money, once it drives out of the factory.

The Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo will be an all-wheel drive hatch, with the inline four-cylinder sending 186kW and 434Nm to all corners, via a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

The brand has not released performance figures yet, but it’s expected that the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo will run the zero-to-100km/h sprint in about six seconds.

As it is, the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo produces more power than the current VW Golf Gti 7.5 (169kW/350Nm) and the Golf 8 Gti (180kW/370Nm) – although it’s not going to be quite as punchy as the Honda Civic Type R (228kW/400Nm), Hyundai i30 N (202kW/353Nm), the Renault Megane RS 280 Lux/Cup (205kW/390Nm) or the RS 300 Trophy (221kW/420Nm).

However, its peak torque figure eclipses those of all the current (admittedly front-wheel-drive) hot hatchbacks.

Given the South African buyers’ love for hot hatches in this category (VW sells far more Gti models than ‘normal’ Golfs), it’s anticipated Mazda would do fairly well should the brand decide to offer the hot 3 locally.

How will you differentiate the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo from its milder brothers?

The Japanese firm said it will offer the hasty hatchback with a choice of ‘aero kits’; the first (standard) package featuring a front air dam and rear roof spoiler, while a second (optional) kit adds a rear diffuser and side-sill extensions.

New ’18-inch BBS gloss-black forged wheels’ will round off the package.

Mazda has yet to reveal what the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo will offer inside the cabin.
