YOUNG scribes (15 to 21 years) who missed the original deadline (Friday, 31 July) for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s annual Youth Essay Writing Competition Against Racism, have until Friday, 28 August to submit an entry.

Launched at an online Youth Day rally, the competition provides a platform for the youth to express their voices against the scourge of racism.

Anti-Racism Manager at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Busisiwe Nkosi, said it is through such platforms that people are able to hear how racism affects young people.

‘For us, these are not just essays,’ explained Nkosi.

‘The entries have allowed us to get a glimpse into some of the encounters that youth have to endure. These include uncomfortable encounters with racism at schools, on playgrounds, shopping malls, social gatherings, or even at home.’

She said the overwhelming request for a deadline extension indicates that more voices want to be heard.
