Blind material recycled into bags to fund charities

The initiative was launched earlier in the year but had to be put on hold owing to lockdown

A LOCAL business has found an innovative way to recycle vertical blind material into beautiful bags, with the proceeds going to charitable organisations.

The initiative – spearheaded by RB Blinds owners, Anneke and Jaco Kleinhans – was launched earlier this year, but halted due to lockdown.

Despite being a small business, the couple knew they could make a difference, so they formalised their partnership with two local charities; Walk in Faith, and NaweZifunze Disabled Association (NAZIDI); both beneficiaries of the bag sales.

Anneke said they have created more than 30 bags so far, and the head seamstress at NAZIDI has been sewing bags as well.

‘At NAZIDI, there are persons living with disabilities who are part of the project, and they are being trained in sewing,’ explained Anneke. ‘There is ongoing skills development and empowerment of community members through the project.’

She praised the team at NAZIDI for embracing the project with vision and creativity: ‘We, at RB Blinds, have made some of the bags, but NAZIDI has gone above and beyond in creating exquisite bags, showcasing their skills.’

She explained that this Mzingazi association, through its sewing project, has re-envisioned the blind material by creating bags in a range of styles and sizes.

‘While colours cannot be guaranteed, we will strive to meet the quantities required, and guarantee that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to these two charities,’ continued Anneke.

The bags range in pricing, from R15 to R70, and are available in the different sizes, including small and large pencil cases, mobile phone carrier cases, A4 shopping bag or handbags. The team can also make bags specific to order requirements.

‘The charities have also taken the initiative to market the bags and attract customers,’ she said. ‘We encourage people to get involved where they can.’

The bags will be available on their website soon. In the interim, orders can be emailed to rbblinds@rb-blinds.co.za
