Severe weather warning issued

DISASTER management teams have been placed on high alert across the province following a warning by the South African Weather Service that an intense cold front could hit parts of KwaZulu-Natal tomorrow (Thursday), going into the weekend.

The cold front is expected to bring heavy rains that could lead to flooding, as well as gale-force winds and snowfall in high-lying areas.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sipho Hlomuka, has urged residents to exercise caution, as the expected change in weather conditions could pose a serious risk to human life.

He said people should heed the weather alert and put in place necessary measures to protect themselves and their families.

‘Teachers and parents must ensure children use safe routes to and from school. Motorists are also urged to be extra cautious as roads are likely to become slippery.

‘Pedestrians should avoid crossing bridges in low-lying areas.’

Apart from the flood warnings, is the threat of snowfall in areas surrounding the Drakensberg.

People are encouraged to check the weather reports before embarking on journeys to such areas typically experiencing snowfall.
