Declined Covid-19 grant applications to be reviewed

The grant is part of government's Covid-19 relief package aimed at helping South Africans who are unemployed and who are not receiving any form of financial assistance

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is urgently reassessing some rejected applications for the Covid-19 R350 relief grant.

The high number of rejected applications has raised questions, and SASSA opted to reconsider some applications before subjecting them to an appeal process.

Last month, SASSA said it received many complaints about rejected grant applications, as at the time the majority of applicants were already on the unemployment insurance fund (UIF) database or qualified to receive UIF payouts.

‘In early June, close to 50% of processed applications did not qualify in terms of the criteria.

‘More than 70% of those either received or qualified for UIF benefits according to the database SASSA used to consider applications,’ the agency said.

However, SASSA has now requested an updated database to reconsider the declined UIF cases, instead of advising aggrieved applicants to follow the appeal route.

‘It emerged that 85% of UIF cases previously disqualified, actually do qualify.

‘They have been approved and the applicants informed.’

SASSA said everyone affected would receive an SMS requesting them to provide their banking details.

‘It is important to respond to the SMS as quickly as possible and to follow the link provided.

‘Approved applicants are reminded that the link cannot be shared with others, as it is linked to a specific ID number for security reasons.’

Meanwhile, more than 2.5 million applicants have already received payment.
