Taxi association prioritises commuter safety

Sanitising of taxis entails disinfecting inside and outside the vehicles, with special focus on hot spots such as door and seat handles

‘OUR taxis can’t be the carriers for the coronavirus. We need to keep our commuters safe.’

This was the sentiment of eSikhaleni Taxi Association (ETA) chairperson, Mduduzi Makhunga, when the organisation launched its sanitising programme on Saturday.

To ensure the safety of its commuters, the association began sanitising more than 300 taxis which had not been operating during Level 4 lockdown.

Makhunga said three full-time people have been employed to ensure all taxis are properly sanitised, and have been provided with protective gear.

‘As we begin Level 3, all our taxis have to be ready for passengers.’

The sanitising of taxis entails disinfecting both the inside and outside of the vehicles, with special focus on hot spots such as door and seat handles.

‘The association has created a budget to ensure every taxi is sanitised in the morning before anyone boards, and at night.

During the day, we will continue to provide commuters and drivers with sanitisers,’ Makhunga said.
