Zululand cluster police spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said police quickly rushed out to look for the suspect and when they confronted him, he reportedly pulled out a firearm and started shooting at the police.

‘Officers retaliated and the suspect ran into the road, and stopped oncoming traffic. He approached an Isuzu bakkie and fired at the driver through the windscreen.

‘The driver quickly opened the door and rolled out, and the shoot-out continued during which the man was fatally wounded,’ Gwala said.

Gwala added that the deceased has not yet been identified.

‘No police officer was injured. Next to the deceased’s body a homemade gun and 13 empty 9mm cartridges were found.’
