Loving new home for abandoned Mtubatuba infant

The woman who found the baby is working with social workers to officially adopt her

THE newborn baby girl dumped by her mother in Mfekayi Reserve, Mtubatuba, has found a new, loving home.

The infant, subsequently named Sinehlanhla Thusi, was abandoned at just one-day-old by her biological mother at the gate of a homestead last Thursday afternoon.

She was spotted by Nompumelelo Thusi (39) when she arrived back home from town.

‘I returned home after buying groceries and I had my lights on. When I stopped to open the gate, my eye caught a suspicious-looking bundle nearby,’ said Nompumelelo.

‘When I went closer, I discovered that it was a baby wrapped in a blanket. I was scared and quickly went inside the house to make enquiries, but no one knew anything about the infant.’

After making some more enquiries with her neighbours, she called the police.

‘Our neighbours said they saw an unidentified woman roaming the street cradling a newborn baby.’

Together with the police, Nompumelelo took the baby to the local clinic, where they were informed that Sinehlanhla was only one day old, but in good health.

‘I am so thrilled to receive such a wonderful, unexpected gift. I’m willing to keep the baby and I have already started buying her some goodies. I am now waiting for social workers to do the paperwork so that I can hopefully officially become her mother,’ she said.

uMkhanyakude police cluster spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, said KwaMsane police were investigating a case of child abandonment.

‘The lady who found the child was very happy since she doesn’t have a girl of her own. She said she would approach the Department of Social Development to allow her to keep the baby,’ said Mdletshe.
