Counterfeit cigarette smugglers nabbed near Hluhluwe

The counterfeit haul was reportedly worth R1.6-million

THREE men were arrested yesterday (Thursday) and their haul of counterfeit cigarettes, valued at R1.6-million, confiscated.

After receiving a tip-off of three vehicles containing counterfeit goods having crossed the Kosi Bay border post and driven through Phinda Private Game Reserve, the Hluhluwe SAPS crime prevention unit, together with the Nyati Anti-Poaching Unit and Alpha Security, stopped the convoy at the Phinda gate.

‘The three vehicles were searched and the counterfeit cigarettes found,’ said uMkhanyakude SAPS cluster spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe.

‘One driver was from Mozambique, one from Manguzi and the third from Durban, where the convoy was headed.’

All three were charged with possession of counterfeit goods and for contravening the Disaster Management Act regulations.

They are expected to appear in the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court soon.
