Entrepreneur finds dumped baby in riverside bushes near Richards Bay

Abandoned newborn recovering well

AN abandoned baby found in Mzingazi on Wednesday afternoon is lucky to be alive after an entrepreneur walking near the river bank heard the desperate cries of the infant.

The community member, who sells merchandise in the area, was crossing a bridge to collect month-end payments at various homesteads when he discovered the newborn girl wrapped in a plastic bag and left in the bushes near the water.

Community worker Sharon Mdletshe was contacted and responded, taking the baby to the Mbonambi community clinic for urgent medical attention.

‘It is a miracle this baby was found alive, especially as the country is in lockdown and people are not moving around.

‘We also received information from a community member who had crossed the pathway at 5am and saw a woman, who appeared to be in a lot of pain, leaving the area where the baby was later found,’ Mdletshe said.

‘The umbilical cord was cut and tied into a knot and it was evident the baby was born somewhere else and just dumped.’

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, confirmed the baby was taken to a place of safety and the case is being investigated by the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.

If anyone has information pertaining to the incident, they can contact Sgt M Mthembu on 082 5570036.
