Empangeni SPCA open for emergencies

A great number of individuals have surrendered their pets to the SPCA owing to affordability issues

THE Empangeni SPCA will only attend to emergency cases during the 21-day lockdown period.

‘We have closed our daily services to the public in the primary health care area by not providing dipping or rabies vaccinations,’ said Empangeni SPCA office manager and inspector, Debbie Cross.

‘We are, however, responding to all calls from locals regarding any issues as we are at the office during our normal operating times and I am on call 24/7.’

A great number of individuals have surrendered their pets to the SPCA owing to affordability issues.

‘Our food stocks are good for the lockdown period owing to a positive response from a recent outreach. But if the lockdown period is extended, then we will be in trouble.’

Animal owners who have any emergency issues with their pets can contact the SPCA on 083 4823866 and they will gladly assist where possible.

‘We are still inspecting commercial premises where animals are living, ensuring they have the correct care during the isolation.

‘In emergency situations we also take in boarders to assist where we can.

‘We have two staff members staying on the property and we are working on maintaining the kennels and animals during our office hours.

Cross told the ZO that one major issue they are facing is a financial one, owing to the closure of their shop.

‘Our shop is our main financial income provider and by having to close it for 21 days is really affecting us.

‘We call on the public to help with financial contributions to sustain us and get us through this stressful period.’
