Travelling businessmen warned against Manguzi robberies

Dozens of people have fallen prey to armed robberies in Manguzi

UMKHANYAKUDE police have warned business people and community members to be vigilant when doing business in Manguzi.

Dozens of people have fallen prey to armed robberies in Manguzi.

Cluster police spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, said suspects have been using various methods to trap their victims.

‘Last week, a Richards Bay businessman, Sipho Magwaza, and his friend were robbed of their bakkie, cellphones and cash by unknown gunmen in the Phelandaba area.

The victim said he went to Manguzi to do window measurements for a potential client whom he had never met before.

The client directed him by phone. At Phelandaba they were to meet a young boy who would guide him to the house.

‘They did meet the boy, but a group of armed suspects then emerged and threatened them at gunpoint. They tied up their hands, drove with them into the bush and robbed them,’ Mdletshe said, pointing out that many similar cases of armed robbery have taken place in the area. All the victims were from outside the area.

‘We appeal to those who have any business dealings with people of Manguzi or surrounds, to first report at the police station for their safety.’
