Join the great global nurdle hunt

Evidence gathered during the global event will be presented at the Scottish government’s International Marine Conference later this month

A global conservation event getting under way and the organisers want you to participate.

The Great Global Nurdle Hunt is taking place between today (Friday) and 17 February to coincide with the run-up to the Scottish government’s International Marine Conference on 21 February.

Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets used in many industries.

Nurdles became public knowledge in South Africa last year when there was a spillage at Durban’s port.

A nurdle map, produced and updated by environmental organisation Fidra in Scotland and which grows wider every year, shows the pellets from Durban’s spillage having travelled on ocean currents, reaching islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, with predicted destinations as far as Western Australia and the coast of Brazil.

Fidra encourages groups and individuals the world over to organise a nurdle hunt during the upcoming week.

‘Using the combined impact of our worldwide effort we hope to raise awareness of this issue to the public, governments and industry, letting them know that tackling this global issue is of utmost importance,’ said Fidra Project Officer Jasper Hamlet.

‘The Scottish government’s International Marine Conference will be an opportunity for us to provide evidence that irresponsible handling practices cause huge impacts across the globe. We need you, our global nurdle hunting team, to help us gather that evidence.’

Those wanting to take part are asked to register interest by signing up on the project’s website – www.nurdlehunt.org.uk.
