Call to assist the vulnerable

Boost for special needs homes

KWADUKUZA Mayor Cllr Ricardo Mthembu has called on civil society to play an active role in assisting special needs care homes.

He was speaking during his visit to Masibathande and Safe Haven for Children and Elders where he donated R20 000 to the two special needs homes located in Ward 5, under KwaDukuza Municipality.

The amount will be used to procure items that are needed by the two special needs homes on a day to day basis, in the main being utensils that are required by the children and elders being taken care of by these homes.

‘We must always think and look after persons who are either vision impaired, deaf, those with mental health conditions, those with intellectual disabilities or those with physical disabilities.

‘We must bear in mind that people did not choose to be classified as vulnerable groups, but were made so by circumstances,’ he said.

During his visit Mthembu expressed sadness at the conditions he encountered and praised those who ran these facilities.

‘The work you do here is important to our society, you are the only family these children have. The conditions of selflessness that you have subjected yourselves to, shows how good your hearts are,’ he said.

The Mayor’s visit also formed part of a series of engagements that the municipality is involved in, in remembrance and celebration of the life and legacy Isithwalandwe/Seaparankoe Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
