Public warned about car sale scams

‘Pre-owned vehicles are advertised in the newspapers and on the internet and buyers are requested to pay a deposit up front to secure a deal'

POLICE are warning members of the community to be on the lookout for internet and print media scams, targeting potential used vehicle buyers.

Many cases have been reported about the public being swindled out of their hard-earned cash through internet scams or print media advertisements.

King Cetshwayo Police Cluster spokesman, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said members of the public must visit the seller before making any bank cash deposits.

‘Pre-owned vehicles are advertised in the newspapers and on the internet and buyers are requested to pay a deposit up front to secure a deal.

‘The vehicles are advertised at such bargain prices that buyers rush to make the requested deposit into the bank account provided by the would-be seller so as not to lose out on a great buy,’ he said.

Mdlalose explained that once the deposited money has been withdrawn from the account, the buyer discovers that the ‘seller’s’ cellphone has been disconnected, and it is usually at this stage that he or she realises that their deposit money has disappeared.

He advised members of the community to rather use registered vehicle dealers.
