3 DECEMBER 2013

Brackenham man hijacked at gunpoint

A BRACKENHAM man, hijacked at gunpoint and robbed of his cash and cellphone on Friday night escaped the traumatic ordeal unharmed as the suspect fled with his BMW luxury vehicle.

Thrishane Govender (22) had left home that evening en route to a friend’s house in Fish Tail Street around 8pm when he was hijacked at the stop street in Via Bugula.

According to Govender, a white BMW had stopped in front of him at the intersection where a passenger exited and was at his open window within seconds, threatening him with a firearm.

The armed suspect got into the vehicle and demanded that Govender drive out of the suburb on the North Central Arterial heading towards Aquadene.

‘He asked me if the car had a tracker and wanted cash and my cellphone and I obliged to his requests.

‘I think the money saved my life because after I handed over the items he told me to pull up at the information board before Aquadene and get out the car and run.

‘I was afraid because he was still pointing the firearm at me, but I got out and ran off as he left with my M3.

‘This was definitely not his first hijacking, he was well spoken and knew what he was doing, so I just went along with it and did not even make eye contact for fear he would kill me,’ said Govender.

Meanwhile, still coming to terms with the incident Govender said, thanks to support from family and friends, he is recovering and while he has counted the losses of all the modifications to his vehicle, he is happy to be alive and feels life is more important than material objects.

  1. Totally disgusted by the behaviour of this young man,why does he feel as though its ok to play with the justice system? He deserves to be in jail for a long time, there are lots of people who live thru this trauma while, and still are trying 2 face the world! What a pitiful way to make some easy cash! Hopefully the justice system refuses him bail!!

  14. Well, why did he do this? Were the installments too much to bear or sheer greed. Judging by his age he may have been too ambitious buying a car that ate him alive in order to impress.

The accomplice who was given the car should also face the music. Keep us posted on the matter ZO. It’s sad when people make these false claims wasting state resources when there are people that really need police help ,

  15. Am pretty sure people of Richards Bay/Empangeni have heard of the saying
    Innocent until proven guilty.
Please people think long and hard before one puts pen to paper.
In Stanger a lady kills her own dad and guess what … she is out on a bail of R1000.00 only and Mr Govender got a bail of R50 000.00 .. this just does not make sense
So is material stuff more important to us
To those that think that Mr Govender could not afford this vehicle maybe you should request for his bank statements to be forwarded to you to verify if he could afford this vehicle or not
Dont be jealous of what you cant afford :]

  16. Some people like showing off even when there bank bal in OD. They want to get rich or die trying. Then the police on to then for fraud. They say Only God can judge them.lol. If ppl say anything about them doing fraud they are jealious etc

  19. Thank you Z0 for keeping us updated on this matter. Plz keep a light on the case. Let’s hope no1 is above the Law.some ppl have contacts in high place’s.

  20. It is because of cases like this that we have to fork out. lot of money for insurance. Let the law take it course and this be a lesson for individuals who is planning something simular

  21. My 2c on the matter… The fact that he qualified for finance for such a car, clearly means he can afford it. generally a car like this would require a huge deposit… and insurance companys will settle the bank, hence he will loose his deposit. so i dont see what he would gain from this type of fraud…by using simple LOGIC, and NOT BRINGING UP RELIGION, you can understand that this guy could have really been hijacked.
