Anti-poaching group needs public’s help

So far the anti-poaching group has removed more than 11km of illegal gill nets

IN the wake of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s marine coastal monitors being disbanded, a handful of Richards Bay residents have formed the North Coast Anti-poaching group and taken it upon themselves to rid the Bay’s waterways of illegal gill netting.

Working with law enforcement, North Coast Anti-poaching has removed more than 11km of gill nets and prawn nets, and removed almost two tonnes of fish from the nets.

Of this number, 956kg of the illegal catch were released back into the water, the rest already having died.

‘We are trying to raise money so we can purchase very small, lightweight boats and small motors, to be able to access the areas where the water depths are too shallow to use normal boats,’ said Sean Koekemoer, one of the North Coast Anti-poaching volunteers.

‘This costs us a lot of free time, as well as fuel for boats, tyres being damaged in areas where we have to drive, flashlights and spotlights needed for night patrols, and infrared cameras.

‘We are grateful for all the help we can get.’
